Experiencing or Expressing?

One of the people I church with has a habit of occasionally asking a perfect, cut-to-the-core question. Last night was one of those times.

“Do you experience Christ in our meetings? If so, when?”

I’m paraphrasing a little, of course. At first I was a little mixed – maybe yes, maybe not enough. Then I realized a counter-question:

“Do we express Christ in our meetings?”

Christians in North America are commonly said to be “consumerist” – we’re all about us, our needs, our wants, ‘what is God doing for me?’ attitudes. I think this is one of the subtleties that reveals some of these habits.

Ask it of your own church – do you express Christ in your meetings? Forget how you feel about it; what are you contributing? What are your brothers and sisters contributing? What’s the fruit?
